» Claves:

Our claves are hand turned from kiln-dried exotic hardwoods for the perfect clave sound.  Whether you’re looking for a cutting clave for the Salsa stage, or a more warm wood tone for Rumba or folkloric settings, Manito Percussion’s Claves have the sound you need.

The woods we use to make our claves come from small pieces cut at the mills while making lumber.  Our wood is top quality but would otherwise be burned or wasted.   We guarantee absolutely the best sounding claves!

Woods Available:

Carob – Carob wood comes from the carob tree, Ceratonia Siiqua.  Carob is a hard, densely fibered wood. Its color is rich, with shades of dark to light brown and red throughout. As a tone wood, Carob has a warm and mid ranged, hollow wooden sound.  It’s an excellent compliment to round out much harder woods like Cocobolo or even Ebony.

Cocobolo – If you want to be heard at the back of the Salsa club, Cocobolo is the wood that cuts through the loudest bands.  Cocobolo is a very dense wood, bright orange to deep red and dark purple with pronounced grain.  Tonally it is among the group of higher pitched woods to use for claves.  It makes a warmer mid range tone in combination with Tambootie, Carob or Bocote.

Bocote – Bocote comes from Central America and sounds as amazing as it looks.  Its grain consists of highly contrasting yellow and deep brown to green streaks.  Its sound is rather loud, but not piercing.  It is a very versatile wood for clave applications.

Bubinga – A widely recognized tone wood, Bubinga is often used for guitar and bass bodies and necks.  Its tone is a solid mix of the high pitched, cutting tone desired for Salsa and the woody, earthy tone often preferred for Rumba.

Tambootie – Tambootie is one of our favorites!  The combination of African Tambootie and Cocobolo wood from Costa Rica is one of the nicest clave sounds I have ever heard.   Tambootie is a very fragrant wood and smells a bit like sandalwood.

Ebony – Ebony is solid black and makes an excellent striker (Macho) when combined with softer, less dense woods like Acacia or Carob.

» Bell Beaters:

Our Bell (Cencerro) Beaters are turned from a variety of local and exotic hardwoods.   The density of the wood used to play a bell can shape the sound of the bell itself.   We offer both high and low density woods to match the sound you want.

Woods Available:

Bubinga – A widely recognized tone wood, Bubinga is often used for guitar and bass bodies and necks.  Its tone is a solid mix of the high pitched, cutting tone desired for Salsa and the woody, earthy tone often preferred for Rumba.

Burmese Blackwood – is very dense with an interesting grain that is hard to put into words. There are greys, blacks/browns, and even little bits of reddish color.  It is a high density wood and produces great attack on the bongo bell.

Bolivian Rosewood – Softer than Blackwood, this rosewood variant is soft enough to absorb some of the overtone ring when striking a bell, giving it an overall warmer tone than other rosewoods.

Muhuhu – A very dense and characteristically yellow wood, Muhuhu will last for years and years  through daily use.  Muhuhu delivers a sharp attack and long clear sustain due to the density of the wood.

Dogwood – Dogwood is a very dense and tight grained local hardwood.  Its merits as a tone wood are underestimated, and it stands up admirably to the abuse of playing Cencerro and it has a deep woody sound perfect for Claves.

Hickory – One of the most recognized and frequently used woods for drum sticks, Hickory wood delivers reliably good tone and resistance to chipping.

Black Cherry – A beautiful local wood, Black Cherry produces a warm and singing tone from the bell.

Pecan – Like Hickory but a bit harder and more durable.  Pecan produces more attack than Cherry or Hickory.

Persimmon (American Ebony)- The only native North American Ebony wood, Persimmon is a cream colored wood with a very high density and very durable structure.  It brings a bright tone to any bell and will last and last!  Persimmon is also a perfect choice for drum mallets.

» Dunun/Tambora/Drum Beaters:

These are like our Bell beaters, but with a thicker diameter and a shape more tailored to getting full range tones from a drum.   Manito Percussion Drum beaters come in a variety of lengths so drummers can find their own perfectly balanced beater.  Each one has our signature handle carved into its one piece design so it’s easier to hold on to.

Drum Beaters come Short (12 in.), Medium (15 in.), or Long (17 in.) and the prices may vary.  See our store for more details.
